Introducing the 2020 Mentor Artist Fellows

Blog

VANCOUVER, Washington, May 6, 2020 – The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) is pleased to announce the 2020 Mentor Artist Fellowship awards. The Mentor Artist Fellowship is a regional award open to accomplished American Indian and Alaska Native artists and culture bearers located in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Southern California, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. Following an open call for applications, sixty Native artists were reviewed by a panel of arts professionals who specialize in Contemporary Visual Arts and Traditional Arts. This year, eleven artists were selected to receive a $30,000 fellowship award designed to support an established Native artist to mentor an emerging Native artist in the Contemporary Visual Arts and Traditional Arts.

“NACF is proud of the success of our Mentor Artist Fellowship. This intensive one-to-one mentoring program has proven to propel emerging artists and their careers, revitalize cultural and artistic practices within communities, and strengthen the mentoring skills of established Native artists and culture bearers,” says NACF Director of Programs Francene Blythe (Diné/Sisseton-Wahpeton/Eastern Band Cherokee). “With great pleasure and enthusiasm, we look forward to working with the eleven 2020 Mentor Artist Fellows and their apprentices in another promising mentorship experience.”

The Mentor Artist Fellowship is a structured fifteen-month program designed to empower artists and build capacity in Native communities for future generations. As part of the program, mentors and their apprentices will complete art projects by the end of the fellowship period to broaden Indigenous worldviews in both Native and non-Native communities. In addition to the monetary award, the fellows and their apprentices participated in a two-day virtual mentorship and professional development training on March 26-27, 2020.

NACF is grateful to Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, The Ford Family Foundation, and to the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation for their support of the mentor program.

The Mentor Artist Fellowship is just one of the ways that NACF invests in artists and communities. Established in 2009, NACF has supported over 350 Native artists and organizations in 34 states and the District of Columbia. The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation’s mission is to promote the revitalization, appreciation, and perpetuation of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian arts and cultures through grantmaking, convening, and advocacy. To learn more about the Mentor Artist Fellows and NACF’s work, visit www.nativeartsandcultures.org.

Celebrating 3 years on Native Voice One

Coming this October we will be celebrating our 3rd year anniversary on Native Voice One – The Native American Radio Network.

We are streaming daily on the web at http://14013.live.streamtheworld.com/NV1.mp3.

Bob Peterson – Station Manager

Bob Peterson, Native Voice One

NV1 obtained by our parent company Koahnic Broadcast Corporation in 2006, is a public radio distribution network providing programs from a Native perspective. At the writing of this article, we distribute 12 programs to over 180 public and commercial radio stations in Guam, North America, and Sydney, Australia. Each of the programs are independently produced and/or hosted by Native Americans.

Thank you for letting me in your head, and filling it with some words. I hope that you find it enlightening, entertaining, and engaging. I am Bob Petersen, the Network Manager for Native Voice One (NV1). In case you are unfamiliar with NV1, allow me to give you a brief introduction.

Whether it is following Tweets, or getting inundated on your Facebook news feed, streamed or downloaded podcasts, or if you get your news from television – or hopefully the radio, or print media; the American cultural landscape is in turmoil. The turmoil raised may be a result of the mixing of cultures, heritages, ideologies, and ever-changing demographics. Leadership principles seem to have given way to soundbites, then to late-night tweets and seem to be moving to the trolling meme.

When will sensibility return so that rational thoughts lead the mind? How is it possible? Whenever I have been under stress – often times I have received guidance from my Elders, mentors, friends, and family who have also been through difficult moments and shared with me what helped them. Who is capable of sharing such experiences and wisdom to our nation and to our communities? It is my conviction that the Native voice is able to provide that insight. It is my conviction that the Native voice is able to offer reassurance. The Indigenous and those who carry the traditions of those before us bring a perspective that those who are new, cannot view.

Those who have only joined the journey on the rough path – only know the struggles and not what lies ahead. The Native voice is capable and the source that can be the voice that cuts through the clutter, the obstacles and misperceptions that threaten to take one off the path. Currently – the Native perspective is not readily available from any other outlet. This is harmful not only to the Native population but also to those that are a part of our community. This is the importance of having a service that NV1 is providing.

Our programs are award-winning and long-running. National Native News has been on the air for 30 years with over a quarter-million listeners each week. Native America Calling, a Monday- Friday live call-in radio program has over 60,000 listeners each week. Now we are celebrating an addition to
our Program list.

Our newest program that we are distributing is ‘Indigenous in Music’ with Larry K. A weekly two-hour mix of new music in rock, pop, country, hip-hop, blues, house and electronica by Indigenous musicians from around the Western Hemisphere, hosted by Larry K (Ho-Chunk Nation).

Biography

Justinsayne N8V exploded onto the independent underground scene in late 2012 with the release of his debut album “RED LIST,” he soon proved to be a serious force to be reckoned with, with his own original rock/rap/native style he calls “RAP & ROLL” or Pop & Mosh.  His songwriting is smart, complex and offers a strong positive message while at the same time reminding us of the real world we live in and how we can help change it for the better, as he belts out songs of love and respect, real life struggles and evolving as a race as we stand up against oppression and hate in all forms.  His songs are personal, deep and straight from the heart, “Angry feel good music.”

He raps in many styles and this rapper also sings, good, he can bust out harmonies as well as attack metal screams and swoon with a deep soulful smooth growl.  He also gained a fast reputation for being a beast on stage and and tearing up live shows.  His follow up album “WAGON BURNER” proved his talent was not limited to just one good album.  It was a beautiful continuation of the brutal in your face head bangers mixed with melodic dark overtones.

His songwriting skills again are exceptional and thought provoking, backed by amazing music production, with plenty of catchy heavy guitar riffs, 808 bass, and turntable scratch action, head bangers and and dance grooves.  This native American underground artist resides in the northwest, was born and raised in Denver and all over the west.  An Ojibwe 7th fire warrior of the bear clan, from White Earth reservation in Minnesota, he stays true to his roots and traditional ways, always sending positive and informative messages through his music.

He has 6 national tours under his belt touring with some of the biggest names in independent music as well as performing at huge national festivals and building his home base of justinsayniacs in his home state of Oregon. He has been featured in over 40 collaboration songs with other artists and a familiar face in the underground hustler series of mix tapes.  He has been nominated for numerous awards and Wagon burner was named one of the 10 best albums of 2014 in Oregon. Since the release of his 2nd album he has toured and rocked stages across the nation non stop, building steam and gaining fans.  Releasing videos and new singles regularly to keep his justinsayniacs appeased.

He has currently just finished his 3rd album titled “BORDERLINE PERSONALITY”.  It promises to be another amazing journey through the heart, mind and voice of the man that brings that native thunda.  If you are wanting something fresh and completely original to bang your head to, look no further.  This is rap for the person that doesn’t really listen to rap! From ages 1 to 100 there’s something in there for you to groove too.  Look him up online and on most all social media links, or catch him on stage in a city near you, you will not regret it.
