Attention Native Artists: Fellowship Open for Applications

The Wyoming Arts Council has announced a new Native Art Fellowship, an unrestricted award of $3,000 open to Native artists based within Wyoming who are working in any artistic discipline or medium. First Nations is honored to read in Buckrail that the fellowship was partially inspired by a First Nations’ presentation at the 2019 Wyoming Arts Summit in Cheyenne. MIDNIGHT SPARROWS is the new solo project from Blair Bellerose, an Indigenous singer/songwriter/guitar player based out of Vancouver, BC, Canada.  After 15 years as the lead guitar player in his previous band SOL 3.  MIDNIGHT SPARROWS sees Blair stepping up to the microphone as a lead vocalist for the first time since his teenage years.
His vocals are gritty yet melodic, demonstrating a character that is uniquely his own, though he has been at times compared to the likes of Tom Petty and Black Francis. For those that are fans of electric guitar at its core ROCK & ROLL CITY is a guitar rock album! Biography

Jace Martin is a Mohawk from Six Nations of The Grand River & has been in the entertainment business since he was 11 years, performing in everything from tv shows to theatre on stage.  He eventually focused on music releasing 8 albums & winning 5 Awards, while touring across North America.  He has shared the stage with Sam Moore, Jeff Healey, Jonny Lang & Robbie Robertson.

Jace has been featured on CBC, GLOBAL, SHOWCASE & Much Music & was heard by over 400 Million people singing during the closing ceremony of the 2015 Pan Am Games.  His last album “Mighty” was nominated for “Adult Contemporary” Album of the Year at 2017 Independent Music Awards & “Pop Album” of the year at the 2017 Toronto Indie Music Awards.  His song, “Free to Fly” debuted #35 on The USA Mainstream Billboard Charts, following in the giant footsteps of 1974 “Come & Get Your Love” by Redbone.

Jace Martin has been nominated at the 2018 Indigenous Music Awards for “Producer of The Year” for his work on Leah Belle “Time For Some Country” Album which is  being played across Canada on over 30 Major Radio Stations & across the world online & Sirius XM. Jace has also produced AK Mcleod’s last album which made it through the first round of Voting for “Blues Album of The Year” at the 2016 JUNO Award Nominations.  Martin’s new single “Ghost” was produced by GRAMMY Nominated Producer, Gavin Brown, is set to be released May 18 2018 Worldwide Online & Canadian Radio and full album in 2020 called Rainboworld dedicated to Salome Bey.

Adrian Sutherland is from Attawapiskat First Nation on the James Bay in remote Northern Canada. He’s a musician, songwriter, speaker, writer, advocate, and the fascinating frontman and founder of roots-rockers Midnight Shine. He’s also a father of four, a grandfather to four, a hard-working husband, and a respected cultural leader, proud of who he is and where he comes from. Adrian is fluent in Cree, practices traditional ways of the land, and is a genuine example of someone who lives authentically. He is currently writing his first book for Penguin Random House Canada, and working on music for his debut solo album slated for release this summer.

BIOGRAPHY

Electric Religious is the project of Edmonton-based Métis singer-songwriter, Brandon Baker, whose guitar-driven music has been described as “bursting with inspiration, insight, and hope.” Deeply influenced by the psychedelic sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Baker took his moniker from a Hendrix quote: “When I get up on stage, that’s my whole life. That’s my religion. My music is electric church music. I am electric religion.”

The debut Electric Religious album, Yeah, Yeah, No (2018) featured the single “Revolution,” which achieved a coveted spot in the CBC Searchlight Top 100 in 2019, and spent multiple weeks at #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown.

Electric Religious easily found a home among Canada’s lush movement of feel-good guitar pop. “Think Mother Mother and the Stars coming together… ‘Revolution’ hits the ground running, weaving capricious guitar, solid rhythms and anthemic lyrics. There are plenty of twists, turns & genre bending moments… Suffice it to say Yeah, Yeah, No is fit to be played on the radio and very loudly” (Edmonton Muse).

Electric Religious has performed for audiences as large as 50,000 during the opening ceremonies for Red Bull Crashed Ice 2015 in Edmonton, which was broadcast to over 1.7 million viewers over network television and live YouTube streams.

In late 2019, Baker began recording demos for his sophomore release, titled Tragic Lover, at Velveteen Audio in Edmonton, Alberta. Working with JUNO-nominated producer, Brad Simons (Nuela Charles – Adult Contemporary Album of the Year), Baker’s collection of seven new songs demonstrate his keen-eyed ability to unite themes of displacement, hope, inter-generational trauma, and healing in his songwriting. Tragic Lover will be released in the fall of 2021.
